Halo 2 (PC: Windows, 2007)

You Can’t Say you don’t like Halo. Even if you claim to dislike it, I know that somewhere deep down in your soul there’s a little gravelly voice cheering its sticky plasma grenades, fun little vehicles and relatively unique take on combat You’ve had some good times with Master Chief, whether sitting on the floor in front of an Xbox with a mate or perhaps even with Gearbox’s PC version of times past. I know that a fire has been lit somewhere deep in your heart – so take hold of my hand, look deep into my eyes and join me in exhaling a smidgen of that green metallic love. Something you can say, though, is that there was no need to keep the PC community waiting three long years for a conversion. A conversion too that now appears dull and ageing, and what’s more can only be run on a Vista platform bereft of anything else worth playing apart from Geometry Wars. That is, at least until the advent of DX10 and the whine of a million gamers opening their wallets and pouring coins into the cavernous maw of Bill Gates. The bare bones of Halo 2 are great – its shooty, hidey gameplay, amusing physics and some genuinely excellent set-pieces notably jumping onboard the giant spider mech in an otherwise barren attack on Earth still get the adrenalin pumping.

Halo 2 was released on the Xbox back in , and as you’re probably aware of by now, it was a huge success. The first-person shooter added online multiplayer to the proceedings, and despite a universally reviled cliff-hanger ending, it was really something special on the Xbox. Three years later, it’s now available as one of the first Vista-only PC games. It’s still easy to see why this game was so loved on consoles in its day, but when you put it in direct comparison with recent PC shooters, it loses a ton of its appeal, making it best suited for Halo fans who want a good way to play or make custom maps.

The original Halo deserves its place in gaming history. Innovations like the adaptive AI, the two-weapons-only carry limit and drivable vehicles were a breath of fresh air for the FPS genre, and the game had an epic, space opera feel that no other game of the time could match.

After refusing to log out for more than three weeks, the last person in Xbox Live on an original Xbox succumbed. Multiplayer Halo 2 is no more. After weeks of showing the world just how much playing Halo 2 on Xbox Live meant to them, a group of hard-core Master Chief devotees who just couldn’t let go of the multiplayer version of their beloved game has given up the ghost. But those who had managed to not log out of Halo 2 were able to continue playing–and won the respect of Xbox Live management, and the attention of the world.

By April 30, there were just a dozen left playing, and at that time, Stephen Toulouse, director of policy and enforcement for Xbox Live, made it be known that Microsoft not only wouldn’t force the dozen out, but was actively watching them do their thing, and appreciating their efforts. Halo 2 for Windows Vista Review

This includes Halo 2 Vista, Project Cartographer, Halo 2 Anniversary, and XboxConnect. Lets bring back the spirit custom games once had by posting them here. It.

This is already a great game, so I will comment on how it is on PC. It is a great multiplayer experience; those familiar with the Xbox Live system will feel right at home, especially since this pc version features the achievement system from the xbox, and the Games For Windows Live system, which Halo2PC uses for online play, is nearly identical to Xbox Live.

The only real problem with this game is that it sometimes runs a little slow, particularly in campaign, even on a high-end system. This is because this game was ported, and thus was not optimized fully for the PC. The game comes out of the box with Xbox controller compatiblity, and I would not recommend playing without one, not because the game’s non-controller controls are bad, but because using the controller is so much better.

Also, in-game voice-chat is good, in fact identical to the Xbox ‘s voice chat system. Unfortunately, no spilit-screen action, co-op, or interfplatform play with the Xbox version.

So, think porting Halo 2 from the Xbox to Windows Vista was easy? Well, it might have been easy I suppose. But the way this blog post from one of the developers goes, it sounds like some 22 month odyssey to get the in-game server browser going. It is a fairly interesting read though, sorta “in the mind of the developer” type of thing. In any event, it makes for a good read into the Halo 2 Vista mentality they had while developing it. Here is a small portion of the blog post discussing the browser among other features of the game :.

Before designing the game browser, we needed to understand the reasons why there should be one in the first place. The Xbox version has a pretty widely-acclaimed matchmaking system, so it would have been foolish to turn our backs on that without careful thought. Fortunately during design, we were able to work very closely with Max Hoberman Bungie’s multiplayer lead for “Halo 2” for Xbox , who had a good vision for the PC version and helped us shift the focus away from matchmaking.

There were many challenges moving the existing system to the PC. First and foremost, the Xbox version by design needs a lot of gamers to be online or the matchmaking waits can become really long. If the first people to buy “Halo 2” for Windows Vista had to wait 30 minutes to be set up for a simple match, they’d be pretty ticked off. Knowing that PC gamers are simply used to a game browser, we voted to make a change in the way players enter multiplayer matches.

Typical PC gamers also like exceeding control over what they’re doing, while mucking with the advanced settings in any program which allows it.
