Colnago C40 LX10
From the C40 to the C50 to the C59, the C60 to the new Colnago C64, that lineage is easy to spot, grounding the bike in storied Colnago lore. But this new Colnago C64 is different. The C64 delivers more performance under power, more aggressive acceleration, more pure speed, than any C series bike before it.
I am moving and need to downsize my bicycle quiver, before Craigslist or Ebay I will offer my near mint Colnago Mapei Team C40 (see Colnago for exact sizing).
We’ll get to all the technical details later but first you’ll want to know what it rides like…? Even with the harsh deep section carbon wheels our test bike came with there was no hint of road buzz getting through to your contact points but yet none of your power input is lost. Long days in the saddle are easily achieved thanks to the relaxed nature of the C59, the ride is certainly engaging but only when you want it to be. On a relaxed club run or an early evening steady ride the C59 is right at home cruising along requiring very little rider input apart from turning the pedals obviously but when you want to get a move on it really shifts.
The bulk of the testing was carried out on my old training roads taking in the hills of Dorset, many years of club runs on various bikes giving me a good benchmark to compare the C59 to and it certainly impressed. The Colnago is a joy to climb on, long steady climbs are dealt with in comfort being able to sit in the saddle and keep the pedals spinning while the short sharp ones take just a rise out of the saddle and a couple of stamps on the pedals to reach the brow and accelerate over the top.
Whether in or out of the saddle, that overall stiffness plays its advantage again wasting none of the power. Faced with technical descents or other obstacles the C59 responds to every command whether through the controls or a shift in body weight. Steering is very quick but not in a skittish way and the front end weights up nicely through tight bends on descents. Colnago sticks with its lugged construction which allows a huge range of sizes, 22 to be exact 14 traditional and 8 sloping giving a virtually custom fit carbon frame.
There are different moulds in the factory and 30 different head tube lugs to accommodate all the variations. Each individual lug is made up of 12 layers of carbon cloth consisting of woven and uni-directional fibre sheets. The tubes are hand wound from pre-impregnated carbon fibre cloth as well; this allows the tubes to be laid up to control the composition and ride characteristics of each individual frame size.
Both the top tube and down tube are created using a mandrel to achieve the cloverleaf profile, the tubes include an internal I-beam rib which Colnago states is there to maximise stiffness.

Following a career ending crash in a bike race, Ernesto Colnago decided to get into the bike trade. From humble beginnings working for Gloria Cycles in a small town near Milano, Ernesto soon had loftier ambitions and opened his own shop in , selling his own hand-built frames. Ernesto was head mechanic at the Molteni Team in , twirling the spanners for the legendary Eddy Merckx.
Many iconic frames were produced in this era including the one Merckx used for his Hour Record in This enabled Colnago to offer more alternatives and greater choice with models such as the Oval CX, Master and Master light. There was a lot of reluctance to use carbon bikes for the toughest pro race the Paris Roubaix, which features rutted tracks and cobbled sectors.
The owner of the Mapei pro team is reported to have telephoned Colnago the night before the team were to use the C40 for the first time at Paris Roubaix.

I created this site to display photos of the current and former bikes in my collection. My main interest is Italian bikes from the 70’s and 80’s, but I’ve had a couple of American bikes as well. I took all the photos in my garage. You can see and read about my photo setup camera, lighting, backdrop, etc.
Now, Colnago’s titanium sleeve is knurled on the outside and has four teeth locking into notches in the carbon shell (see photo). It is far more.

The following article was originally printed in cycling weekly, march 27 Is it wrong for Colnago to produce a race bike for the masses? After all, both the Madone and the C50 are pinnacles of their respective ranges and the Dream B-Stay has been around for a few years – in fact the model we’re testing is the incarnation.
Don’t worry, we aren’t testing an out-of-date model, the Dream will be available for this season. Top End Features Construction of the frame is made with Columbus renowned Airplane tubing, and at the rear carbon-fibre chainstays are used along with the carbon B-Stay. Colnago uses the same B-Stay throughout its range of bikes.

A true technological reference point that, with its even more advanced features, anticipates the future of high-end bicycles. The carbon fiber tubes and lugs have a star section, to take the shape introduced with the Master, the steel frame; the walls are thinner and the structure lighter, rigid and resistant. It is the first bike with disc brakes on road. Fork and rear triangle have been redesigned to support the load generated by the discs.
The total weight is only grams more than the traditional model.

I am cold and wet and grimy from travel. And I am smiling. I am smiling as a hand grips my elbow. I turn to see year-old Ernesto Colnago, founder of the eponymous company, at my side. And I mean it. Permit me to boast: After nearly 20 years of bike testing , I have ridden thousands of bikes. The frames weigh grams or less, yet are stiff and comfortable—and handle as though imbued with magic. Amazing, and also anonymous. The look, the feel, the performance, the story, and even the finish of all these bikes is so similar that part of the experience of the ride feels lost: a connection to the bicycle, a connection to the people and passion behind the bicycle.
On my test ride I found the C60 noticeably stiffer than the C The C60 is not anonymous.

This aluminium Colnago Dream, dressed beautifully in a Mapei team paintjob, will certainly appeal to fans of the Italian marque. Check out the frame on eBay here. It feels like an age ago that Deceuninck-QuickStep rode on anything other than Specialized bikes, but the Belgian squad’s predecessors — and Mapei, in particular — were long-time users of Colnago frames.
Colnago provided the Spanish Clas team with bikes from , and the squad rode into the s as Clas-Cajastar, with the likes of Fernando Escartin and Pello Ruiz Cabestany on its books, with Tony Rominger joining in The Dream model dates from the late s, while a later Dream Plus model was ‘upgraded’ to include a carbon-fibre rear triangle. We can find no evidence of the Dream being ridden by the pros — although we’re more than happy to be corrected — but many pros were certainly still riding high-end aluminium frames well into the s, as well as more recently — at the Tour Down Under.
Most of the Mapei team’s victories came on Colnago’s famous carbon C40 model, and later the C50 and C59, until in — as QuickStep-Davitamon — the team moved to Time frames, followed later by Eddy Merckx bikes and Specialized. The Dream boasts the same star-shaped top tube as Colnago’s pricier carbon models, which became somewhat of a trademark. Continue to dream about owning a C40 — we’ll allow you that — but this Dream will tick a lot of boxes for Mapei and Colnago fans.
